Award winning artist Sheila Carey was born in New London, CT and has
almost always lived near the sea. A lifelong fascination with art
began as a child and continues now as she creates mystical seascapes of
the ocean she loves--sometimes accenting her work with boats, mermaids
and animals. There is local talk that Sheila is also the "Manasota
Mermaid"! "I feel a spiritual connection to the sea and sky which
inspires me to capture their haunting qualities in my work."
Recent paintings include abstracts of water, done in complementary
colors. This artist's skillful range of talent is evidenced by
humorous Pet Portraits, People and Home portraits, a series of Ireland
paintings produced during an Art residency there--and a "Montana Series"
currently in progress--inspired by a May 2008 trip to a Montana Dude
Her education includes a degree in Design from the Ray-Vogue College of
Design in Chicago, Illinois; scholarships completed at John Herron
School of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana and Norwich Free Academy, Norwich,
Connecticut. In addition, she has honed her craft at Ringling
School of Art, Sarasota; University of Hawaii, Honolulu; and the
University of Nevada.
Exhibitions of her work have been held in Honolulu, Chicago, Dallas, Las
Vegas, Sarasota, Venice, Punta Gorda and Englewood. In addition to
oil and acrylic paintings, Sheila creates unique Mermaid and Merman
dolls, and Mermaid "capes" (flowing chiffon ponchos with beaded trim)
which are carried in stores from Naples to Cortez.
Sheila belongs to Venice Art Center and Art Center of Sarasota. She
is currently represented by LEMON TREE GALLERY, Englewood, FL and CILL
RIALIG ART GALLERY, Ballinskelligs, County Kerry Ireland. As she
works in her studio near Manasota Beach, FL her motto continues to be:
"LET NATURE BE YOUR TEACHER"
SHEILA CAREY'S ARTIST STATEMENT
My happiness lies in the magic of expressing my journey through life. I am strongly aligned with the sea, in part due to my Irish/Portuguese ancestry, and partly because of my fascination with the magnificence of water, in all its many moods. I often say I need water like others need oxygen!! Using oils, acrylics and mixed media combinations, I try to paint the dance of Nature:
- waves rolling, rising, crashing, absent
- the waltz of moon, stars, sun & clouds
- the sway of palm trees and other foliage
